Canandaigua City was once a Seneca village occupied by inhabitants who escaped from the neighboring Seneca village of Ganondagan. Settlers from New York and New England established Canandaigua in 1789 and formally became a town in 1791. The village of Canandaigua separated from the town in 1815 and became a city in 1913.

Now, the city of Canandaigua is famous for its tourist attractions, booming downtown business section, attractive residential neighborhoods, agricultural resources, and pretty summer huts and lakeside cottages and summer houses.

Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail is a 41-mile track that covers well-loved wineries, amazing cafes, gourmet food stalls, and picnic spots.

The City Pier was built in the mid-1900s in order to store boats and agricultural products on the road from steamboats, line the pier and draw painters and photographers.

Kershaw Park is a wonderful local hangout right along Canandaigua Lake. The relaxing breeze comes from the lake and a beach not far from the play area. Close to the lake are concrete pathways to the wall as well as a lot of fishing access spots and a pier to walk on.
