Canandaigua City was once a Seneca village occupied by inhabitants who escaped from the neighboring Seneca village of Ganondagan. Settlers from New York and New England established Canandaigua in 1789 and formally became a town in 1791. The village of Canandaigua separated from the town in 1815 and became a city in 1913.
